This summer, I spent a few days of holiday in Kent, and one of the most intriguing attractions I came across was the Shell Grotto in Margate. I decided to explore it, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. The grotto is truly a hidden gem — a subterranean passageway adorned with a stunning mosaic of 4.6 million shells. What makes this place even more fascinating is the mystery surrounding its origins — no one knows who built it or why. You can learn more about its history on its official website or through its Wikipedia page.
I’ve added a few photos to my gallery, but trust me, pictures don’t quite capture the magic of the grotto. If you ever find yourself nearby, it’s definitely worth a visit.
At the far end of the passageway lies the mysterious Altar Chamber, another enigma of the grotto. I couldn’t resist taking a 360-degree photo in an attempt to try and capture its atmosphere! The photo is taken using my mobile phone, not some fancy equipment. In addition, the light is a bit dim, so parts of the photo are not as sharp as they should be. Make sure you switch to full screen using the full screen button if you want to enjoy it properly.
At the entrance of the grotto, you’ll find a well-stocked shop offering a wide range of shell-themed souvenirs. It’s a favourite spot for both kids and the young at heart, with plenty of charming keepsakes to take home (or stuff that will clutter your home … you decide which one).
